Is the decrease in new COVID-19 case in Italy just a consequence of limited testing or is there a true reduction of the number of new infected? This graph shows that that the number of new tests is increasing even if the the number of new cases is decreasing. This suggest that the decrease in new cases reflect a true reduction in the spread of the infection in the country. The graph shows weekly averages to reduce daily fluctuations due to delays in data collection and reporting.

Another reassuring sign of progress is that the number of people in hospital and intensive care is decreasing. This is a more reliable set of data than then number of new positive cases, or even deaths and recovered, because it includes complete reports from all the hospitals and ICUs on the Italian territory rather than a limited sample of tested individuals. È importante verificare se la diminuzione dei casi di COVID-19 in italia è solo una conseguenza della limitazione nel numero di tamponi eseguiti o se riflette una genuina riduzione nel numero dei nuovi contagi. Il primo diagramma mostra che il numero di nuovi tamponi sta aumentando mentre il numero di nuovi casi sta diminuendo. Questo andamento suggerisce che la diminuzione di nuovi casi riflette una vera riduzione della diffusione dell’infezione in Italia. Un’altro segno di progresso è che il numero di persone ospedalizzate ed in terapia intensiva per coronavirus sta diminuendo. Questi sono dati più affidabili dei nuovi casi positivi e anche delle morti e dei dimessi/guariti, perché includono rapporti completi da tutte le strutture sanitarie sul territorio piuttosto che ad un campione di dati come nel caso dei tamponi eseguiti.
